Otter pride is strong

Published Thursday, May 8, 2008

Have you been to a Fergus Falls High School spring sports event lately? If the answer was yes, then you’re aware that the student athletes you watched were some of the finest in west central Minnesota.

Otter athletes are good athletes on the field, but even better people away from the game action.

To those who watch Otter sports, it should have been no surprise that Fergus Falls High School student athletes won a record five Central Lakes Conference sportsmanship awards for their participation in winter sports.

Awards went to boys nordic skiing, boys swimming, girls basketball, girls hockey and wrestling. In the fall, the girls swimmers and volleyball players won similar awards.

That’s seven sportsmanship awards for the Otters — and the spring sports season hasn’t been completed yet!

Superintendent Jerry Ness said this week that the district’s coaches stress playing classy whether they win or lose a game. The sportsmanship awards hammer that point home.

Fergus Falls should be proud of its student athletes. Their contributions off the field are part of the fabric that make this a special community.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Way to go athletes AND their coaches! To win an award for sportsmanship is, in many ways, preferable even to winning awards for athleticism because this character trait is a dying commodity in our competitive society. And not just ONE team or sport is listed as recipients of this distinction but MANY. What does this say about our high school? Plenty! You have given us reason to be proud in Fergus Falls.
