Lessons learned in tech program
Published Friday, May 9, 2008
Things aren’t always what they appear to be on the surface. That’s a lesson that we all can learn from the Minnesota State Community and Techical College’s Computer and Network Technology — System Administration Emphasis program.
It was about two years ago that MSCTC partnered with the Fergus Falls branch of Affiliated Computer Services (ACS) with the hope of bringing high-paying, high-tech jobs to Fergus Falls.
A handful of students enrolled in the program excited about the prospects of gaining a good job in western Minnesota.
But there was some misunderstanding along the way.
MSCTC was excited about the program, city leaders championed the program for its potential to bring 30 to 50 high-paying jobs to Fergus Falls, and ACS hoped it could provide jobs in Fergus Falls.
But the truth of the matter is, promises were never made.
Somewhere along the way the economy and job market changed. ACS didn’t find itself in a position where it was adding entry-level jobs to its local workforce.
By all accounts the students in the program see their experience at MSCTC as a good one and feel they received a valuable education. They graduate tonight and many have job prospects elsewhere.
We wish the graduates of the program well in their future endeavors.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
