Otters win North Invite

Published Sunday, May 11, 2008

FARGO — Mike Tuel led a determined Fergus Falls boys’ golf team to victory in the Fargo North Invitational Saturday at Edgewood Golf Course.

Tuel, who shot a hole-in-one Friday to bring in a two-under-par 69, fired an even-par 35 in Saturday’s rain-shortened tournament to beat Moorhead’s Nick Osgaard by three strokes for medalist honors.

The Otters made up four strokes in their pursuit of tournament leader Moorhead Saturday.

Fergus Falls and Moorhead finished the cold, wet morning of golf in a dead heat with 452 rounds. The Otters triumphed in a scorecard playoffs, giving them three victories for the week to go along with a runner-up finish.

Fargo South placed third with a 454 while Shanley was fourth with a 459 and Fargo North was fifth with a 474. A field of 13 teams competed in the tournament.

“Our goal was just to give ourselves a chance to win the tournament,” said an elated Ben Jurgens. “The guys really came ready to play. We knew going in it was going to be cold and crummy out.”

Playing in rain and snow, the Otters got a 104 from Tuel, a 117 from Trevor Gervais, Lucas Gervais and Allen Sellner, a 122 from Mitch Thorsen and a 124 from Taylor Shuck.

The Otters will compete in the Rocori Invite Monday and the Detroit Lakes Invite Thursday.
