Grant to fine-tune emergency response

Published Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Grant County fire departments, ambulance crews, county emergency teams and mutual aid partners always are looking to fine-tune their emergency response skills. Not every emergency is related to an accident or natural disaster.

On Saturday, May 31, county emergency teams will respond to a school shooting simulation. The drill will take place at the Herman/Norcross School in Herman.

“It’s important to note that there have been no threats to any of the schools here in Grant County,” said Tina Lindquist of the Office of Land Management/Emergency Management, Grant County. “This exercise was chosen to help strengthen our relationships with the administration, staff, and faculty at our schools with the responders of Grant County.”

Lindquist said the drill is in response to the fact that, tragically, school shootings do happen.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re part of a big school district or smaller district,” she said. “No one wants any sort of disaster to happen — especially a man-made one that affects our children.”

The upcoming drill in Herman will focus on scene security, opening a shelter site and triage. The response teams from Grant County will work with the area S.W.A.T. team to learn how they can help the S.W.A.T. following a school incident.

“It’s important for everyone to understand that this is only a drill,” Lindquist said. “We’re doing this to work on building strong relationships between all of those who would respond to this type of incident.”

She said Grant County always is working to create a culture of preparedness and to learn more about what response teams can do to keep the county a safe place in which to live and work.

Questions can be directed to the Grant County Emergency Management office at 218-685-4967.
