Teachers back to work — packing!

Published Thursday, May 29, 2008

The school year officially ended on Friday for Fergus Falls Public Schools, but for staff members the hard work has just begun. Teachers all over the district are rolling up their sleeves and packing up their belongings for next years’ new locations.

This week, along with wrapping up normal end-of-the-year tasks, teachers are placing belongings in boxes, which will then be picked up and moved Saturday to their new locations by professional movers.

“Many of them have 20,30 years of curriculum stored up,” said Superintendent, Jerry Ness.

Although not all teachers are relocating, all are feeling the effects of the transition.

“Everybody is being inconvenienced a little bit in this process,” Secondary School Principal Dean Monke said.

Teachers at the middle school are scattering in all directions. Fifth grade teachers are relocating to the new Cleveland addition, which is scheduled to finish this August. Their belongings will be stored in semi-trailers outside of the school until it is ready for use.

Sixth grade classes are moving to the Eisenhower building, which hosted classes for ECFE and Headstart this past school year. According to district business manager, Mark Masten, the building is nearly emptied.

Early childhood programs will relocate to McKinley, which will host both ECFE and kindergarten classes.

Teachers at the high school are making room for the seventh and eighth grade teachers, who are taking over the school’s c-wing next year.

Fourth grade teachers, currently at McKinley, are moving to the new Cleveland addition. They, too, will store materials in a semi-trailer in the front of Cleveland until its completion. Because an exact date has not been set for the end of the Cleveland project, staff members are preparing themselves for, what could be, a hectic beginning to the 2008-09 school year.

“It might be a mad dash at the end of the summer to get that ready for school,” said elementary schools principal, Scott Colbeck.

Teachers who have the luxury of moving into their classrooms this summer are planning on putting in a few extra hours to prepare their rooms for the upcoming school year.

“A lot of the teachers are very generous with their time,” Monke said.
