Membership a perfect gift for senior citizens

If you have visited any of the local stores recently, you are well aware that Christmas is rapidly approaching.

Perhaps you are one of the more organized people who has kept an eye on the calendar and already started your gift list for Christmas. The kids are always easy to shop for.

There are mountains of toys and so many attractive little outfits to wear. Friends, too, are not usually difficult as there's often a little hint to follow up on. But what about grandma and grandpa? Ask them and you still don't get much help — possibly something like, "Oh, I don't need anything."

But that's the clue, "anything." How about "something” viable" like a membership in the Senior Citizens Program?

This would provide an interesting place for them to go, an opportunity to meet new friends and participate in various activities. Maybe they realize they need more physical exercise, but where do you start?

The Senior Center has recently just purchased 12 pieces of state-of-the-art exercise equipment and added the services of a trained fitness instructor who will design a program suitable to the abilities and needs of the individual.

Studies have shown that exercise is an important factor in contributing to both physical and mental health and ultimately to one's longevity.

The cost of an annual membership is only $12 per year, a mere pittance compared to the benefits.

Next Monday, the 17th, I will be putting on my Golden Page editor's hat and visiting our Adopt-a-Class third graders at Cleveland School. Bernice Roysland, one of the Golden Page writers who was formerly a teacher, will join me and we will introduce the students to the Golden Page and discuss with them their plans as budding authors to write for the January issue.

This is part of our intergenerational program at the Senior Center.

Tuesday has been designated as "Hat Day" at the Senior Center at the noon meal. Don Pederson will offer prizes for the funniest, fanciest and most unusual hat worn that day.

So, check out your hat collection and come prepared for some laughs.

Make a reservation and stay for the soup and sandwich lunch too.

On Thursday, we celebrate birthdays of our members born in November. Join us at 11:30 a.m. to wish them a happy day.

Enjoy the baked ham noon meal afterward.

Finally, a reminder. Don't forget to polish up your dancing shoes and limber up a bit so you are ready for the

Harvest Dance on the 24th.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
