Published 05:32 p.m., November 21, 2008

Kara Fisher continued her assault on the Otter record books Friday at the prelims of the state swim meet at the U of M Aquatic Center.

Fisher established new record times with her second place swim in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 58.20 and her third place finish in the 200 Individual Medley, finishing with a time of 2:01.19. Fisher’s time in the 100 Backstroke beat the existing state Class A record as well, but just shy of the time set by Taylor Foster of Breck School.

The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Heidi Busack, Susie Kitzman, Ariel Schuelke and Fisher also set a new school record, with a time of 3:38.49, good enough for second place in the prelims.

“For the first day it was a very good meet, we swam solid,” said Otter coach Tom Uvaas. “We got a lot of breaks, and we’re happy with that. We had two relays in the top eight (400 Freestyle Relay, 200 Medley Relay), and the 200 Freestyle Relay placed in the top 16, so they will swin in Saturday’s consolation finals.”

The 200 Medley Relay team of Fisher, Kitzman, Busack and Sarah Monk finished in fourth place, qualifying for the final round on Saturday.

Busack racked up a pair of second place finishes in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 23.93 and the 100 Freestyle, with a time of 52.80. Both times were personal bests for Busack.

Swimming in Saturday’s consolation finals will be the 200 Freestyle Relay team of Taylor Monk, Shannon Johnson, Sarah Monk and Susie Kitzman. the team shaved two seconds off their previous best time.

Kitzman placed 11th in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 1:01.10, and Monk was 16th in the 100 Breaststroke 1:10.96, ensuring both a place in the consolation finals.

Miranda Anderson shaved three seconds off her personal best time in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5:38.57, but finished outside of the top 16 at 21.

“We really like where we’re at heading into Saturday,” Uvaas said. “We’re in the running for a top five finish, and the girls are excited and ready to go.”
