Finest marble used in Federal Building
Published Saturday, October 11, 2008
The Fergus Falls Federal Building opened to the public on May 16, 1904. The building was built in between 1903-1904. Local builder John Lauritzen served as the contractor.
On Feb. 24, 1904, The Fergus Falls Daily Journal reported that the Lauritzen Bros. received the finest marble ever brought to Fergus Falls to be used for the wainscoting for the building.
The building has since received two additions. The first an addition at the rear completed in 1927. The second doubled the buildings size with an addition to the south in 1932-33. John Lauritzen also served as the contractor for these projects.
The original building was designed by James Knox Taylor, Supervising Architect for the Department of Treasury. The addition to the south was duplicated under the direction of General Service Asssociation (GSA) architect J. A. Whitmore.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
