FF girls eliminated at East Grand Forks

Published Tuesday, October 14, 2008

The Lady Otter Soccer team drew first blood and led 1-0 at the half, but were unable to hold the lead, as East Grand Forks advances in the Section 8A playoffs, beating Fergus Falls 2-1.

“The field conditions were very wet and sloppy which made it hard for both teams to control the ball,” said Otter head coach Karoline Brause. “The girls did a great job of keeping EGF off the board in the first half by playing some pretty tough defense.”

Kaitlyn McClaflin got the Otters on the board first on a redirect, assisted by Chelsey Enderle. East Grand Forks kept the ball in the Otters’ zone for most of the rest of the half, though the Otters were able to step up defensively, doing a great job of not allowing EGF to score off of their numerous free kicks from right outside the box.

Six minutes into the second half EGF was awarded a penalty kick and converted to tie the score 1-1. With four minutes left in the game, EGF was awarded another indirect kick from 20 yds out, resulting in a controversial goal.

“This was a very tough loss, and it was sad to see it end this way,” Brause said. “I have to give credit to all the girls out there last night playing in the mess on the field and through all of the adversity that the game created. These girls had a great season, beating some of the teams that they never have, like Moorhead, St. Cloud Tech, Sartell and scoring 13 more goals than they did last year. We had only been shut-out twice and we shut out our opponents six times.”

The Otters end the season with a 9-9 record.

The goal was not questionable. The Fergus Defender clipped the legs of the EGF attacker right outside the box. It was a solid call. I must commed the Fergus parents for showing classy sportsmanship, by harrassing the official all the way to the poor guys car. I was embarrassed to even be from Fergus Falls with the classless comments by Otter Fans.

I know that it is a tough loss for any team to lose in the Section Playoffs, however, someone has to advance. The "controversial goal" was nothing of the sort. It was a DIRECT FREE KICK (not indirect), caused by an obvious foul committed by the defender. The kicker made a beautiful shot to the far post, that would have been difficult for many keepers to save. Regarding the Penalty Kick, the defender, not only tripped the attacker in the box but also shoved her down as she was attempting to rise (unsporting behavior /YELLOW CARD). In over 33 years of my association with soccer I have never seen fans (Fergus Falls) with such poor sportsmanship. This obviously does not speak for all FF fans. No referee ever determines the outcome of a game. Each team has 80 minutes (high school) to score as many goals as they can. The referees can only call it the way they see it, they are human too.
