Flu shot time in Otter Tail County

Published Wednesday, October 15, 2008

The Otter Tail County Public Health Department will offer flu immunization clinics again this year. Both state and local public health officials are urging people to get their flu shot so they will be protected by the time flu season gets underway this year in Minnesota.

Because it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to be effective, October and early November is generally the best time to get immunized.

Although it is difficult to predict exactly when the flu season will arrive, the first Minnesota cases are usually reported in late November or early December.

It is never too late to benefit from a flu shot, even if flu is already in the community.

Flu immunization clinics are for:

• Persons at increased risk for flu complications, which includes

• Persons 50 years and over

• Persons with chronic health conditions

• Children aged 6 months to 18 years

• Pregnant women

• Health-care personnel

• Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children aged 5 years and adults 50 years of age and older.

• Residents of long-term care and other chronic care facilities.

General Population:

• Persons who want to reduce the likelihood of influenza

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
