Conversions kill Underwood
Published Saturday, September 6, 2008
Underwood hosted Verndale Friday night in Pheasant Conference football action, with the third-ranked Pirates coming out on top by the score of 32-24.
The Rockets scored early in the 1st quarter on a 1 yd run by Brandon Burns, but failed to pick up the extra points on a two-point conversion.
The TD was set up by a half-back option pass completion on the first play from scrimmage.
The Pirates responded with two TD runs and nearly had a third, but the Rockets forced a fumble and recovered it on their own 1 foot line.
Later in the second, Todd Skauge returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown. The conversion failed again, and the Rockets went into halftime down 12-16.
In the second half, the Rockets answered two Pirate TDs with scoring runs by Skauge and Burns. Again, the conversion attempts failed after both touchdowns.
“I’m real disappointed with our extra points,” said Head Coach Chuck Ross. “We didn’t make one and they made all of theirs, and that was the difference in the game.”
Todd Skauge finished the night with 124 rushing yards on 28 attempts. “Our offensive line did a great job, and Skauge ran the hardest I’ve ever seen him run the ball.”
The Rockets will play Bertha-Hewitt next Friday in Underwood.
