Several filing for council, school posts

With the primary election scheduled for Tuesday, and the general election less than two months away, several people have filed for city council and school board positions in area communities.
In Pelican Rapids, school board elections are held in odd-numbered years. However, a levy referendum will appear on this year’s Nov. 4 general election ballot.
Following is a list of communities with candidates for city council, school board and mayor.
Pelican Rapids — There is one filing for the office of mayor, Ben L. Woessner, a current member of the city council. Present Mayor Wayne Runningen is not seeking reelection. Filing for city council was Michael L. (Mel) Mellgren.
Battle Lake — Filings thus far for school board include Brenda Mathiesen, incumbent; Emily Larson, incumbent; Deb Bottko and Cory Johnson.
Perham — Kevin Keill has filed for mayor. Filing for the city council were James Johnson and Anita Mycke.
New York Mills — Two city council seats are open, each for four-year terms. The two incumbents have filed for those. Richard Rankka is completing his first 4-year term. Julie Gerber was appointed in May 2008 to fill out a 4-year term ending in December 2008 which had been held by Kirk Mann who resigned. The mayor seat is also open, for a two-year term. There have been no filings to date for this seat.
Parkers Prairie — One person has filed for a city council position, David Schmidt. The city has three council member positions and the mayor position to fill.
West Central Area — Running for school board are Deb Starner, Larry Lindor, Daryl Amundson, Chad Biss and Steve Martineau.
