Religious freedom should still count
Published Tuesday, September 9, 2008
I am a senior citizen from the “Greatest Generation,” and have waited for years for the citizens of the U.S. to grow up.
I received a bundle of misinformation from a relative about Barack Obama. I told them that I hoped that before I die we can find a president who is not white, male, Anglo Saxton and Protestant.
If we truly are the melting pot nation that we claim to be why can’t we admit that someone with a different background could be the president of the United States and do an outstanding job?
Pundits admit that Obama is a billiant man, a caring family man, charismatic, an inspirational orator, but then they add, “but do we really know him?”
It’s not like he suddenly appeared from outer space two years ago. He wrote two books about himself and his family. He was educated in the U.S.; graduated from Harvard Law School; worked in the inner city of Chicago doing community work; was a state congressman for six years; and was elected to the U.S. Senate. He also taught constitutional law in Chicago.
I’m ashamed that many so-called Americans say they won’t vote for Obama because he’s black. He’s also half caucasian.
Why is it in a country where the church and state are supposedly separated, we are now suddenly concerned with religious orientation of our presidential candidates.
Our country was founded on religious freedom; why should that suddenly not count?

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by sametoyou (anonymous) on September 9, 2008 at 12:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Why is it that these self proclaimed christians(republicans)can only use scare tactics and lies about Obama in order to try to steal this election? Are their followers that simple minded and gullible? Oops, I guess I just answered my own questions!

It's funny that in a country in which about half the citizens that are so concerned with "Islamic Extremism" are the same people with "christ in Education" signs in their yards. They have no problem with "Christian Extremism". We don't want the Government to tell us what we believe, period. That's one of the main reasons why this country was founded. If you dont like it, and you want religion in government, move to Saudi Arabia. All you racists can move there too. A white redneck in Saudi Arabia: no beer, no women, no nascar, no tongue because it would be cut off for saying "Jesus"

Congratulations "Greatest Generation". It truly was the greatest generation. It was the America I grew up in and was proud of. Todays America is completely different. It's an America, I'm ashamed of. Within a generation, the white, male, Anglo Saxton and Protestant will be a minority in this country. Then and only then will America swing back to what it once was. The greatest country in the world. That is if the country isn't completely wrecked by then. America is a good fifty years from electing a black man or a woman as president. The country's biggest problem is the Press. The press is not free anymore. It's controlled by a bunch of right wingers. Reporters lose their jobs when they stray away from right wing ideology. Take Chris Matthews and Keith Olberman of MSNBC as an example. Their republican bosses have just shut them up. They will no longer be anchoring any live political events during the election season. The lies being perpetrated on the American People must continue. If the population actually knew what was going on, the republican party would cease to exist in this country.

B. Obama is a Christian, despite whatever lies the self-rightious, mindless, fear mongering Fergus Falls e-mail clique may pass around. Probably more founded in his Christian religious beliefs than McCain.

LOL :) you people are funny. I hope this guy isn't trying to tell us he represents the greatest generation? First of all there are very few of the Greatest generation still alive. If they were all still with us, He would represent a small percentage of those people. The people of that era would have never tolerated any of this. at that time the bible belt was still very strong along with racism. God was a big part of the lives of most Americans at that time. If you tried taking god out of this country back then you would have a war like there should be now. And any of you that know anything about American History know these things to be fact. I personally don't have a problem with an African American running for pres. Obama is not African American & he himself isn't sure of his religion. I don't know why there is this big attack on white Christians in this country and against America. Especially by so many so called Americans. Do any of you know any history? America has done more good for this world than probably any 2 countries combined. Kennedy & Reagan both have more than likely saved the planet from nuclear distruction. Ancient civilizations & not just one, have predicted what has happened over the past few years, & what is happening now & Obama fits into it as the third anti- Christ. Right down to the likable and slick with words. They even foreseen the attack on christianity at this time period. I've never been one to believe in that stuff a whole lot, but this is getting to be right out of the texts. If they are right & have been almost to a T so far, This will be the last president ever.

Facts? I did not see a lot of "facts" in the above paragraphs. Just old-book way-of-thinking. That line of thought is steadily ruining even Fergus Falls, unprogressive as it is.
And those Christians in town who go to church every Sunday to worship their God? They are the same ones who come out the same church and criticize the God of the church down the block... Some of the meanest people in town go to church every Sunday as if attending church makes them Christ-like.
Go Barrack.
