90º and sunny - But don’t get too comfortable

Published 12:00 p.m., April 24, 2009

Fergus Falls area residents had a taste of summer Thursday — something many area residents haven’t experienced in quite some time.

Temperatures in the area climbed to 90 degrees, breaking the previous high of 88 degrees set in 1990. Warm weather prompted residents throughout the city to head outside for a number of classic sunny weather activities.

The loop around Lake Alice was a bit busier than usual, with plenty of walkers, bikers and runners taking advantage of the warm weather.

“We had to think of something to do to make this day special,” said Carma Synstelien, who was out enjoying a walk with her four-year-old son Noah and two-year-old daughter Olivia.

Morning Son Christian School students took their gym class, traditionally held at the YMCA, out to Broadway Park, where students were able to enjoy the weather after spending the winter season exercising inside.

“Spring fever is very evident with students at this time,” said Morning Son physical education teacher Kathleen Rittenour. “Now they’re burning off some steam and having a little fun.”

Rittenour said she’s appreciated the efforts of the Parks and Recreation Department, which has been putting in the hours to get parks ready for the spring and summer seasons.

For Morning Son third grade students Zakary Zwiers and Thomas Mattson, now is the time for biking and afternoons spent playing baseball with the neighbor kids.

“It feels good,” Mattson said.

Curt Walvatne and Nicole Anderson enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather while sitting out in the sun and shooting the breeze.

“That sun feels absolutely wonderful,” Walvatne said, as he sat with his daughter at a table set-up outside of Barringer’s on Lincoln Ave.

“It’s good for the soul,” Anderson said.

Summer-like weather experienced on Thursday will be put on hold as cold weather heads into the area this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, showers are likely throughout the day today, with rain and snow expected onight. Saturday’s forecast calls for a high of 49 degrees, with partly sunny skies. Showers are expected Saturday night and on through Sunday, with a slight chance of rain and snow Sunday evening.
