LACC to hold variety show

Published 12:00 p.m., August 26, 2009

The Lakes Area Community Center has brought something for all tastes with their “Come to the Lakes” series of summer concerts. The final program of the year in Battle Lake will bring it all together with a composite of many flavors, like the “end of the garden relish.”

The performance begins Thursday, Aug. 27, at 8 p.m. The Lakes Area Community Center is located at 112 West Main Street, one half block off Lake Avenue (Hwy. 78) in Battle Lake.

“Our Second Annual Variety Show seems to be a tradition worth establishing,” said volunteer Linda Tikkanen. “The evening’s music will be presented with voices, guitar, piano, flutes and drums. Your voice can be added to some ‘sing-along’ tunes.

Featured performers will include local artists Courtney and DJ Cline, a local brother and sister duo, and Rich Jibben who will add a country flavor with voice and guitar. The “Bumble Bees Quartet” brings barbershop harmony to their selection of favorites.

“It’s a rare treat with the Flute Choir of Alexandria, led by Karen Erickson,” said Tikkanen. “They’ll perform music with a Celtic lilt from Children of the Wind.”

Cindy Peterson, Battle Lake’s vocal music teacher, will introduce the school’s new African Remo drums as she leads this premier performance of the Drumming Ensemble. This addition to the music department comes courtesy of Larry’s Supermarket.

“Cindy promises that this set of 15 drums, each with different tones, will bring a whole new experience in rhythm and music,” said Tikkanen. “You can participate in the drum tunes or sing some familiar songs to the energetic piano accompaniment of Dick Grenell.”

She said the impressive array of talented musicians promises an evening of entertainment that people won’t want to miss.

“Come early for Boppa’s Popcorn and stay late to visit over lemonade and some special goodies provided by Bev’s Bakery,” said Tikkanen.

Thursday’s program is not the last hurrah of summer — summer isn’t over until Elvis sings. The Lakes Area Community center is hosting “A Tribute to Elvis” on Saturday, Sept. 5, at 8 p.m. Todd Anderson brings Elvis to life with his showmanship and rich voice.

“Todd has organized the Elvis Tribute Artist competitions at the Mall of America, performed in Las Vegas and does regular cruise tours,” said Tikkanen.

The Elvis concert will be held at the high school’s Royal Auditorium. There’s room for everyone and you can get your reserved seat in advance. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and $5 for preteens.

The “Tribute to Elvis” program concludes a day of activities that begins with the Battle Lake Community Funds Annual Fly-In. Look for the big balloon at the Fly-In. LACC will be there to send you up-up-and away, actually just straight up and down on a tethered hot air balloon ride.

Tickets for the Elvis program will be available at the Balloon Ride and can be purchased at LACC weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
