PELICAN RAPIDS — A balanced scoring attack carried the Pelican Rapids girls basketball team past Ulen-Hitterdal Tuesday evening in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference battle.
Six players scored at least five points as the Vikings ran away with the game in the second half.
After grabbing a 12 lead at the break, Pelican Rapids (1-0 HOL, 1-0 overall) out-scored the Spartans (0-1, 0-1) 28-20 in the final 18 minutes.
Kendra Coleman and Mackenzie Strand were the only two Vikings players to reach double-figures, registering 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Ann Skow-Anderson and Madison Korf tallied eight points apiece while Erica Morgan netted six.
Megan Zilmer led all scorers with 22 points for Ulen-Hitterdal.
Hancock 43,
Battle Lake 33
BATTLE LAKE — A 13-point halftime deficit proved too much to overcome as the Battlers (0-1) dropped their season-opening nonconference game against the Owls (1-0).
After trailing 26-13 at the break, Battle Lake pulled within six points midway through the second half, but simply couldn’t make up enough ground as the Owls grinded out the victory.
“Hancock played a very fundamentally sound game and shot the ball very well,” Battle Lake coach David Marso said. “They showed why they will contend for the section title this season.”
Ashby 60, Wheaton 57
WHEATON — Amanda Johnson caught fire early and often, pouring in a career-high 34 points as the Arrows (1-0) took down the Warriors in a nonconference game.
Johnson also led the team in rebounds with eight and steals with six.
Ashby struggled from the field, connecting on just 32 percent of their shots but made up for it with 22 converted free throws.
Brandon-Evansville 50, Osakis 15
EVANSVILLE — The high-octane Chargers (1-0) raced out to a 32-4 halftime advantage and didn’t look back, overwhelming the Silverstreaks (0-1) in a nonconference match-up.
Several players contributed at both ends of the floor for Brandon-Evansville, led by Megan Strese’s 17 points and nine rebounds. Heather Strese chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds while Brittney Randall and Katie Boesl combined for 11 points.
