Wrestling: Otters open with victory

WILLMAR — The Fergus Falls wrestling team dominated the light and heavy weight portions of the its Central Lakes Conference match against Willmar Thursday night, defeating the Cardinals 45-33 in both team’s season-opening competition.

Tyler Giza (103 pounds), Abbot Aho (112) and Alex Johnson (119) registered consecutive victories for the Otters to start things off before Willmar closed the margin with three straight wins.

The teams traded points before Fergus took control and ultimately clinched the match by winning in five of the last six weight classes.

Tyler Garding and Colton Thorson closed things out with consecutive pins at 215 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Garding took down Anthony Wood in 39 seconds before Thorson beat Austin Anderson in 31 seconds.

The Otters are in action again at the Dan Unruh Memorial Tournament at 5 p.m. in Wahpeton, N.D. on Friday. The competition continues on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Vikings struggle at home

PELICAN RAPIDS — The Pelican Rapids wrestling team dropped a pair of matches at a home competition against West Central and Otter Tail Central.

The Vikings lost 63-9 to WCA and 61-12 to OTC.

Jim Cossette and Alex Klovstad were the only two Pelican Rapids grapplers to finish the evening 2-0.

Cossette — wtestling at 135 pounds — beat West Central’s Seth Felland, 9-8, before pinning Jacob Meder of Otter Tail Central in 4 minutes, 35 seconds.

Klovstad won by fall against the Knights’ Keith Kuseske in 2:56 and took down Jed Nilson 3-1.
