Computer basics a click away

Published 12:00 p.m., December 7, 2009

A Fergus Falls man who once struggled to use a computer is now helping other seniors learn the basics.

Don Partridge is the creator of D. Easy Learning System, a guide for people new to using a computer. A DVD and accompanying manual takes users step by step through computer basics, from using desktop features to creating documents to navigating the Internet. Instead of teaching a specific program, it shows users how to understand a computer, preparing them to learn future programs on their own.

It’s a product Partridge designed with seniors in mind. Several years ago, the 78-year-old took a computer class through Community Education, but found he needed a few years of self-teaching before he was adept at using a computer.

“To point and click is simple,” he said. “To know where to point and click is another matter.”

So about three years ago, Partridge decided to turn his newfound knowledge into a business venture. Using his own equipment, Partridge produced and edited a DVD which he also narrates. Via the DVD, Partridge takes viewers through a 45-page manual featuring large print and images of computer menus, windows and icons. Partridge said he tried to cover only the most basic functions to keep users from feeling overwhelmed. Once they’ve mastered those basics, they have the tools to tackle more intricate programs.

“There’s so much to computers it never ends,” he said.

A former home builder from the Twin Cities, Partridge is a long-time entrepreneur who’s made innovations in construction, gardening and even toys.

“I learned what it meant to be a pioneer,” he said.

Computers are new territory to many seniors and Partridge is marketing his product as a gift idea for parents and grandparents. Priced at $99.99, D. Easy Learning System is for sale at Victor Lundeen Company.
