Novak still going strong at age 80

Published 06:15 a.m., December 10, 2009

Several months ago fellow nurses had no problem asking Phyllis Novak, who turns 80 on Sunday, Dec. 13, if she’d again be willing to become president of the Seventh District of the Minnesota Nurses Association. Novak, active with several organizations, was willing to take on the job, a role she also held in the 1970s and late 1990s.

Novak, said her fellow nurses and friends, is young at heart.

“Phyllis is not only dedicated to nursing, but is also dedicated to people,” said Sandy Edwards, a Registered Nurse (RN) who works at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.

Novak worked as an RN at Lake Region Hospital from 1964 to 1987, and then worked for 12 more years at the Regional Treatment Center in Fergus Falls. She’s a native of Angus, north of Crookston, and graduated from Warren High School. Novak received her RN Degree from Hibbing General Hospital.

The Seventh District includes Otter Tail, Douglas, Todd and Wadena counties. The district includes 239 nurses.

“Travel is fairly close to home,” said Novak, “with many of our meetings here in Fergus Falls and in Alexandria. This is a good organization that works for the advancement of working conditions for nurses and patients, alike.”

The Seventh District of the Minnesota Nurses Association is one of 13 districts from around the state. The presidency of each district calls for a two-year term. Novak’s term began in June 2009 and will run through June 2011.

Novak is active with the American Cancer Association, serving as Cancer Memorial chairperson and as a member of the Relay for Life planning committee. She’s also active with Our Lady of Victory Church, where she’s a member of Catholic Daughters. Novak is a past secretary for Meals by Wheels.

“We’re fortunate to have such an able and caring person as Phyllis, that’s for sure,” said Edwards. “The presidency of the Seventh District of the Minnesota Nurses Association is in good hands.”
