WAHPETON— After falling in game one of the Minnesota/North Dakota Shootout Monday night, the Underwood boys basketball team picked up a much-needed 58-54 win over Lidgerwood in game two Tuesday night.
The Rockets (3-4) started to close a 12 point deficit with just under eight minutes to play, grabbing the lead for good with two minutes remaining.
Brandon Masloski led the Rockets with 12 points and seven rebounds. Dalton Jampsa and David Thoen each had 11 points.
“The way we played defense in the second half led to the late comeback,” Rockets’ coach Curt Olson said.
Underwood shot a much improved 75 percent from the line.
MN/ND Shootout play concludes on Wednesday with the Rockets taking on Sargent Central.
Pelican Rapids 79, Frazee 50
PELICAN RAPIDS — After losing to D-G-F last Thursday, the Vikings got back on track against a struggling Frazee team in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference clash.
Pelican Rapids (3-2 overall, 3-2 HOL) surged out to a 30-point lead at the break and coasted from there.
“Our defensive intensity caused them some trouble,” Pelican Rapids coach Brad Strand said. “We forced some turnovers, which led to some easy buckets.”
Casey Bruggeman led all scorers with 24 points while snaring five rebounds. Teammate Dan Wood offered a formidable offensive complement, tallying 21 points.
The Hornets drop to 0-7 on the season.
Battle Lake 79, NY Mills 54
BATTLE LAKE — An equal opportunity offense did the job as the Battlers ran away with the game in the first half and held on for a Little Eight Conference win.
Five players scored at least eight points for Battle Lake (3-2 overall, 2-1 LEC), three of which reached double-figures.
Alex Ukkelberg netted 18 points and teammate Marty Charest added 17 to lead the Battlers. Adam Marso scored 14 while Jake Ukkelberg and James Hustad chipped in with eight apiece.
“We were more balanced on the offensive end than we have been all season,” Battlers’ coach Dan Peterka said. “We moved the ball well and made the extra pass.”
Adam Snellgrove led New York Mills with 18 points.
Hancock 72, Ashby 35
HANCOCK — The Owls flew out to a 52-11 halftime advantage and sailed to victory.
Needless to say, Arrows’ coach Ryan Risbrudt was a little dejected.
“Hancock controlled every aspect of the game,” he stated via e-mail. “Our guys came out with no emotion and let the pressure of the Owls get us on our heels.”
Ashby (2-2) — which has lost its last two games — turned the ball over 32 times and registered less than 10 assists.
Jordan Lillemon scored seven points for the Arrows.
Breckenridge 64, West Central Area 63 (OT)
BARRETT— Walker Busse of Breckenridge hit a three pointer at the buzzer in overtime to lift the Cowboys over the Knights in a Heart O’Lakes Conference game Tuesday night.
Regulation ended in a 57-57 tie.
Beau Kashmark had 21 points, 5 boards, and 5 blocks for the Knights (4-2). Colton Blascyk finished with 15 points while Knights’ big man Sam Richards netted 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Busse finished with 12 points for the Cowboys.
West Central Area will take on Battle Lake in a non conference game next Tuesday at home following the Christmas break.
Barnesville 85, Rothsay 32
BARNESVILLE— The Tigers were out matched and routed in a non conference game Tuesday night.
Rothsay was out-rebounded 39-25 and committed 32 turnovers.
The Trojans used a 54 percent shooting performance in the first half to build a huge 67-21 halftime lead.
Barnesville rested its starters in the second half while the teams played under a running clock.
Cody Hannemun led the Tigers with 22 points.
Rothsay (0-5) will look to pick up their first win at the Concordia College Tournament Monday. The Tigers square off against Norman County East to kick off the tournament.
