Girls basketball roundup: Otters sink Rocori

COLD SPRING— The Fergus Falls girls basketball team picked up a key Central Lakes Conference victory over Rocori 70-63 Tuesday night.
The Otters led by has many and 15 points in the second half while the closest the Spartans got was within six.
Mariah Monke had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Otters. Brianna Rasmusson also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Sophomore forward Sydney Schultz scored nine points fresh off her 30 point performance in last Thursday’s 68-61 win over St. Cloud Apollo.
“I thought we were safe with the ball and crisp in the passing game,” Otters’ coach Josh Mohagen said. “We kind of took our foot off the gas in the second half. We need to learn how to not get complacent and learn how to play with a lead.”
The Otters (4-2) committed four more turnovers than the Spartans, but out-rebounded Rocori 33-23.
Fergus shot 43 percent from the floor and 66 percent from the foul line.
Jordan Hansen scored a game-high 32 points for the Spartans.
After starting the season 0-2, the Otters have won four consecutive games heading into the Holiday break.
The Otters will be back in action next Tuesday when they host the Fergus Falls Holiday Tournament.
West Central 71, Ashby 62
ASHBY — The Knights almost let a sizable halftime lead slip away, but held on for the non-conference victory on the road.
West Central led 47-29 at the break, only to watch Amanda Johnson and the Arrows (3-2) shrink the lead as the second half crept along.
Johnson collected 29 points and 17 rebounds, both game-highs for the Arrows.
“Amanda played great, but I was happy to see the determination from the rest of the girls,” Ashby coach John Kent said. “This will be a great game to build on.”
The victory was the fifth in a row for the Knights (6-2).
No. 6 Bertha-Hewitt 64, Brandon-Evansville 52
EVANSVILLE— The Chargers fell to 1-2 against ranked opponents with a non-conference loss to the Bears Tuesday night.
Chipping away at an early 13-2 deficit, the Chargers cut the lead to 20-19 before Bertha-Hewitt went on a 8-2 run to close out the first half and take a 28-21 lead into the break.
“We didn’t shot the ball very well in the second half and they (Bertha-Hewitt) just out-played us all night,” Chargers’ coach Dick Simpson said.
The Chargers (5-2) shot just 37 percent from the field.
Heather Strese had 16 points and 11 rebounds while sister Megan finished with 14 points.
Bertha-Hewitt’s Kendra Stokes led all scorers with 25 points.
Brandon-Evansville’s Holiday break will carry past the new year with its next game not until Jan. 5.
