Boys basketball roundup: Hot start sends WCA past BL

BARETT — The West Central boys basketball team raced out to an early 20 points lead and didn’t look back against Battle Lake Tuesday evening, winning 70-56 in a non-conference contest.
The Knights started the game on a 24-4 scoring spurt, building the sizeable lead with hot shooting and sound defense.
The Knights — who led 34-20 at the break — torched the nets from outside, nailing 10 of 17 shots from beyond the 3-point line.
“The Battlers tried to take away some things inside and our outside players shot the ball well once again and we were able to get a big lead early,” West Central coach Kraig Hunter stated via e-mail.
Bryce Olson spearheaded the attack for the Knights (5-2), finishing with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Colton Blascyk added 20 points, four assists and three steals.
Adam Marso registered a double-double for the Battlers (3-3), scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Ulen-Hitterdal 64, Rothsay 26:
MOORHEAD — Tigers’ points guard Nick Fiedler was forced into 10 turnovers and 1-for-11 shooting, helping the struggling Spartans notch their second win of the season in eight tries.
The Tigers, meandwhile, continue to struggle in every facet.
“We struggled on the floor this afternoon,” Rothsay coach Darren Rogness said of his team’s 9-for-46 shooting effort. “We missed too many open layups and makeable shots in the paint. U-H kept pressure on the ball and made things difficult.”
The winless Tigers fell behind 35-16 at the break and scored just 10 points in the second half.
Cody Hanneman carried most of the load at both ends of the floor for the Tigers once again, registering a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
“We just need to finf those who are going to consistently come along side Cody each night,” Rogness said.
Devon Neulied — who Rogness said played a “great game” — scored 13 poits to lead the Tigers (0-7). He also pulled down six rebounds, five on the offensive end.
The Tigers’ final game at the Concordia College tournament is this afternoon at 3 p.m. against Manahga.
