Keep hydrants clear:

• Staff with the Fergus Falls Fire Department are asking residents to clear snow from fire hydrants near their homes.

Heavy snow covers hydrants and creates an additional step for firefighters responding to a fire, said Chief Mark Hovland. Residents who take a few minutes to dig out nearby hydrants save precious time for authorities in emergency situations.

• This week we shared a story about teen driving safety in the aftermath of the fatal crash on I-94 at Alexandria. Police Chief Tim Brennan and Sheriff Brian Schleuter shared some thoughts after we went to press. The new laws that went into effect as of Aug. 1 are designed to assist those with new driver's licenses to gain more experience behind the wheel. To that end, for the first six months, only one passenger under age 20 is permitted in the vehicle, unless an adult is present. No cell phone usage is allowed, Brennan said. Gaining experience, said Brennan, can save a life down the road. Said Schlueter: New drivers need experience, with help of adults in the vehicle. “You only learn by doing in various weather conditions, with the proper speed," he said.

• Cal Larson was reappointed to the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth by Gov. Tim Pawlenty. He will serve a six-year term that will expire on Jan. 5, 2015. Larson, of Fergus Falls, served as a member of the Minnesota Senate from 1987 through 2006 and was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1967-74. For 12 years he represented Minnesota on the Great Lakes Commission.

• Congratulations to Sheila Meyer of Deer Creek. Meyer won $10,000 playing the Lottery's Break The Bank. The winning ticket was purchased at Denny's Conoco, SOO Inman St. in Henning.

I can't believe this, who plugged the fire hydrants! The snow plow driver, I live behind Westridge mall and the plow is to blame for plugging by pushing snow up to and over the hydrants.I couldn't remove the snow if I wanted! The city should do it, they created it!
