More snow precedes a blast of cold weather
Published Monday, January 12, 2009
More snow fell on Otter Tail County this morning, with decreasing temperatures and windchill down to 23 below zero predicted for this evening. Temperatures were expected to be around the zero mark by 5 p.m. today, with winds between 21 and 29 mph.
The National Weather Service’s Grand Forks office predicted daytime accumulation of one to three inches of snow today in the Fergus Falls area. A 30 percent chance of light snow again, after noon, is the forecast for Tuesday.
Snow and strong winds were expected to head into central and south-central Minnesota this afternoon. A windchill advisory is in effect for much of Minnesota from midnight until 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Windchill will be the big factor during daytime hours on Tuesday. Increasing clouds and cold, with a high near minus-5, is expected. Windchill on Tuesday could be as low as minus-36 degrees in some areas of Otter Tail County. New snow accumulation of less than one inch is possible.
More snow is likely Tuesday evening. The skies will be cloudy with a low of around minus 8 degrees. Windchill could be as low as minus 29. Winds from the southeast could gust as high as 20 mph and the chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
Skies will be partly sunny on Wednesday with a high of only minus 3 degrees. Bitter cold will be evident Wednesday night, with a low of around minus 24 degrees.
Thursday also will be a cold day, with a high of minus-seven.

Shoot! I was glad the roads were getting pretty clear from the constant traffic so drivers could see the road markers and actually stay in their lanes.

Man, the snow piles at the intersections are a hazard!

Does anyone know how much snow we've received so far this winter in Fergus?

It is now -26. Why would school not be at least 2 hours late?

We had school in the 70's and early 80's if it was -40 and 3 feet of snow. They never closed school then.

So much for a January thaw!

They also used to put salt or sand on the roads in the 70s and 80s. I know we are 'over budget,' but the roads are just plain dangerous in town right now. Specifically, by Hillcrest/Adams School areas, where there are many, many kids around and absolutely NO sand down whatsoever.

Where you drive 10mph and not only have to watch for kids but for adults who swing their doors open into oncoming traffic. I saw two adults do that the other day where not even one car could creep thru. Adults: use some common sense. Cars are barely moving and you still throw your doors open so a car creeping by has to come to a complete stop. Union ave in front of Adams should be no parking on one side. Park down one of the off streets instead of the busiest street. I try to avoid that whole area when school is in session.

Come to think of it, I believe in front of Adams USED to be no parking thru the early-mid 90's. I believe it was all yellow curb and only the buses could stop there. It should be the same again.
