Wilkin County stand-off ends with man’s arrest

Published Monday, January 12, 2009

A 19-year-old man will undergo a mental health evaluation at a Breckenridge hospital after a standoff with Wilkin and Otter Tail County authorities Sunday afternoon.

Jonathan August Stuehrenberg left his parents’ residence in Kent just before 11 a.m. Sunday, armed with a scoped rifle, approximately 500 rounds of ammunition, several large knives and outdoor survival gear. A disagreement had ensued that morning, Stuehrenberg’s father told the Wilkin County Sheriff’s Office, and Stuehrenberg had said he did not care if he died and would fight law enforcement if they tried to interfere.

Authorities located Stuehrenberg in a tree line about half a mile from his parents’ house, where he appeared to be digging and making a shelter, according to a statement from the Wilkin County sheriff’s office.

When an officer approached Stuehrenberg on a snowmobile, Stuehrenberg responded by pointing his weapon towards the officer, who immediately returned to a covered position. Stuehrenberg ignored requests to walk out and meet with officers and could be seen pointing his rifle toward the incident command area on several occasions, the sheriff’s department reported.

Wilkin County Sheriff Thomas Matejka arrived on the scene and requested the Otter Tail Tri-County SWAT Team be activated. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office provided additional snowmobiles and assistance and the Minnesota Natural Guard provided a tracked vehicle and personnel to operate it.

At about 4:30 p.m., SWAT team members used the tracked vehicle to approach Stuehrenberg’s location. Stuehrenberg complied with commands and was taken into custody. He was transported to St. Francis Health Care for medical evaluation.

Minnesota Natural Guard? FFDJ--God you guys make yourselves look stupid. Editing and spell check would go a long way for you.
