Lady Otters crush Brainerd 6-3

Published 09:44 p.m., January 13, 2009

Lady Otter skaters Erica Magnusson, Christina Masten and Liz Underwood scored a pair of goals each Tuesday night as Fergus Falls beat host Brainerd 6-3.

“We’re coming out very strong in our last few games,” said Otter head coach Brian Vatnsdal. “We set the tempo tonight right off the opening face-off, and that was a big plus for us.”

Masten got the Otters on the board first, scoring at the 3:17 mark of the first frame with an assist by Erica Magnusson. Masten scored again just a minute-and-a-half later, finding the back of the net on a short-handed goal with a little help from Magnusson and sophomore forward Lizzie Link.

In the second, Magnusson scored her first goal of the night, unassisted on a power play. At the 2:17 mark, Underwood scored her first goal, assisted by Tayler Vatnsdal and Devon Clark.

The Warriors finally got on the board at the 8:02 mark of the second period as Brainerd’s Ellie Whiteman lit the lamp, assisted by Nicole Godbout and Elizabeth Desrocher.

At 13:10 of the second period Magnusson scored her second goal, this time unassisted. The Otters ended the period with a 4-1 advantage.

At 2:26 of the final frame, Underwood scored her second goal, assisted by Vatnsdal and Haily Johnson. Brainerd answered at 6:22 with a goal by Godbout, assisted by Ellie Whiteman, and once more at 14:28 when Sarah Gorvin found the back of the net, unassisted.

Warrior goalie Nhi Dinh turned away 18 of 23 shots she faced, while Otter net-minder Karlee Werre stopped 15 of 18 shots.

“We’re really working hard around the net, and it shows,” Vatnsdal said. “All that hard work in practice is starting to pay off.”

Fergus Falls is now 6-6-3 on the season and sit atop the Central Lakes Conference standings. The Lady Otters host Detroit Lakes on Saturday.
