It’s never too early to start learning a second language, according to Fergus Falls French teacher Deb Sutor.

To support that theory, Sutor, along with her group of students, visited with Sue Rinke’s eighth grade students Tuesday to introduce them to the world of French.

“We want to just give them some exposure to French,” Sutor said.

French is first offered within the Fergus Falls public school system to students during the ninth grade year.

The day was also a chance for French II students to demonstrate their learned abilities and encourage younger students to give future French studies some thought.

“It’s a great opportunity for French II people to share what they’ve learned with students,” Sutor said.

Eighth grade students were given lessons in French greetings, key phrases, letters and numbers. From that, all students were able to play games such as tic-tac-toe, while communicating in French.

“It’s really to get them immersed in some of the French words and culture,” Rinke said.

The culture aspect even included the opportunity to indulge in traditional French goodies, like pain au chocolat, a chocolate filled croissant.

That happened to be the students’ favorite part of the lesson.

Some of the older students who have traveled to France as part of a class trip also shared their experiences, explaining differences and unique aspects of the French culture.

“It’s just really fun...to make that connection,” Sutor said.

Sutor’s students visited Rinke’s class throughout the day, with many students sacrificing their time usually spent completing homework and studying for finals.

Ah oui, J'aime étudier Le Français. Cela était une mémoire préférée de l'Ecole secondaire.

Keep it going, and students, follow it through and make a trip to France or at least Montreal when you get proficient at the language.
