Pelican Cagers win big at Hawley
Published 12:22 a.m., January 23, 2009
A pair of double-doubles by Tyden Storrusten and Eric Shulstad led unbeaten Pelican Rapids to a 89-66 win in Hawley Thursday night. It was the Vikings first win in Hawley in three years.
It looked as if the trend would continue for a fourth straight year, as the Vikings started slow and the Nuggets took a seven point lead midway through the first half.
“Hawley played well defensively,” said Viking coach Brad Sand. “Our shots weren’t falling.”
Pelican Rapids regrouped enough to lead 38-26 at the break despite hitting only 13 of 36 first-half shots.
The Vikings got on track in the second half, especially from behind the 3-point arc, and hit 7 of 11 from long range to get the win.
“We knew it wasn’t going to be a cakewalk,” Strand said. “Hawley is a tough place to win.”
Storrusten finished with 39 points and 12 rebounds. Shulstad scored 18 and grabbed 10 boards. Brian Guler came off the bench and chipped in nine points.
Taylor Harms led the Nuggets with 18 points. Beau Sorenson finished with 17. Jon Spaeth added 11.
Pelican Rapids will try for their 14th win in Barnesville tonight.
