DFLers glad Senate race is over
Published 12:00 p.m., July 1, 2009
Otter Tail County DFLers say they are glad the legal dispute surrounding Minnesota’s Senate race is over.
Nearly eight months after voters went to the polls, the state’s Supreme Court named Democrat Al Franken the winner in the contest with Republican Norm Coleman in a 5-0 decision Tuesday. Coleman conceded that afternoon.
Michael Windey of Ottertail says he’s glad the state finally has a second senator, though he’s surprised Coleman decided not to take the case to a federal court. Franken understands he won by only a few hundred votes, Windey said, and knows he has to earn the trust of everyone in the state.
“I think Mr. Franken is probably going to be a very positive and hardworking senator for everyone in Minnesota,” Windey said.
LaRon Adkins, who met Franken early in the race, also characterized the senator-elect as hardworking. Franken has traveled the state extensively and knows what Minnesotans need, Adkins said.
“I’m really excited and happy that it’s over,” she said. “It’s been way too long.”
For Manley Nichols, who chairs the Otter Tail County DFL, the conclusion of the recount affirms the work of election officials.
“What I think is most important is it confirms what I have always felt, that...election judges carry out their counting with the utmost care and integrity,” he said. “Election judges do the best job they can do.”
