Relay: A great effort

Congratulations to the Relay for Life organizers and event participants for the job they did last Friday and Saturday raising money for cancer research.
Otter Tail West Relay for Life events brought in $85,000 this year for the American Cancer Society. While those numbers are down from $114,000 last year, those involved should be commended for raising so much money in these difficult economic times.
Volunteers put in a lot of work both for the Relay, and for the events leading up to it, and it showed.
Not just in the dollar figure, but in the well-organized event overnight Friday that featured a great deal of participation, entertainment, and sharing of emotion.
Many people walked the course at the fairgrounds looking at the names on the luminary bags and remembering the lost. There were many hugs and tears, smiles and laughs.
The Relay for Life was truly an excellent event, and all of the organizers, volunteers, and participants should be commended. The reduction in funds raised is no reflection on the event organizers or participants.
The 2009 Relay for Life can also serve as a challenge to the community. Fighting cancer is a powerful mission. With some effort Fergus Falls can come together to celebrate, remember, and fight back and raise those donation figures back up to the 2008 levels again next year. We look forward to being part of the effort.
