A nine-year-old boy sustained serious head injuries in a boating accident Sunday afternoon on Rose Lake, which is located northeast of Vergas.
The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department said the boy’s condition was upgraded Monday from potentially life threatening to guarded. He was taken to Perham Hospital and later transferred to Fargo by helicopter.
The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. Sunday when a boat operated by Dan Riehl, 39, Fargo, was pulling two nine-year-old children on a tube when the children were struck by a second boat.
A nine-year-old female received minor injuries. However, a nine-year-old boy suffered more serious injuries.
The accident was about 200 yards southeast of the Rose Shores Campground.
Initial reports stated that the boy suffered a laceration to the head and was bleeding when brought to shore. A witness at a nearby campground with a emergency room training helped care for the boy while Vergas Rescue was in route to the scene.
The boat that hit the children was also pulling tubers, according to witnesses at the scene. The two boats involved in the accident were the only boats on the water at the time of the accident, according to witnesses at the scene.
Sheriff’s Department officials said the use of drugs or alcohol were not factors in the cause of the accident. However, the incident remains under investigation of the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department.
Also in the Vergas area Sunday: A Moorhead man was thrown from his moped Sunday while traveling in rural Vergas.
George Christian Parker, 61, was traveling east on Loon Drive around 10 a.m. when he veered off of the gravel road, entered the ditch and was thrown from his vehicle, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office. Parker’s injuries were undetermined though likely minor, the sheriff’s office reports. He was transported to Perham Memorial Hospital by Pelican Ambulance.

My thoughts and prayers go out the the boy and his family. I pray he is able to fully recover. I hope others can learn from this accident.

If you're going to list the name/age of one of the drivers, it seems only fair that you should print the name/age of the other driver, especially since the article states that that driver's boat hit the tubers.

The driver they mentioned is the one who was driving the Moped, not one of the boat drivers.

Actually, if you look back to paragraph 3, it says, "The accident occurred at about 4 p.m. Sunday when a boat operated by Dan Riehl, 39, Fargo". I believe this is the "name/age" that FindTheTruth was referring to.
I hope that all that were involved in this accident are recovering well.

Actually phishnchick, I believe he was asking about the driver of the boat that HIT the children. See paragraph 7.

Actually luvmyboys, I was responding to worthy01's comment that said that "The driver they mentioned is the one who was driving the Moped, not one of the boat drivers." Worthy01 appears to be saying that the only name mentioned in the article was that of the moped driving. I was pointing out that they did mention ONE of the boat operators and not the OTHER one the hit the children. Which is what I believe FindTheTruth was trying to point out. But none of this matters because the new article that is under the record section does list the other driver now.
