Chicken ordinance passes

Published 08:10 p.m., July 6, 2009

An ordinance allowing chickens in Fergus Falls neighborhoods will go into effect later this month.

The Fergus Falls City Council completed the second reading of the proposed chicken ordinance Monday night, with council members voting 5-3 in favor of the measure.

The ordinance is a one-year provision allowing 12 permits in R-1 and R-2 zones. Each permit carries a limit of four chickens. Roosters are prohibited, as is the slaughter and breeding of chickens. Permit applicants must either provide written consent from all abutting property owners or provide proof that notices have been sent to these individuals. If the city’s animal control officer receives an objection within 10 days of the mailing, no permit will be issued.

The ordinance also specifies the location and size of chicken coops and runs. These details are available by visiting the city’s Web site, where the chicken provision is listed as Ordinance 108.

A notice is scheduled to run in the Daily Journal later this week or next week, and the ordinance will be effective 15 days later.

Council members voting against the ordinance were Jim Fish, 2nd Ward; Jay Cichosz, 3rd Ward; and Randy Synstelien, 4th Ward.

Do you not read the whole article? The last sentence states who voted against it and that info was on the original article before your post. Stop wasting others tome by putting stupid comments.

As an aside to this this momentous event, 14,000 souls still call Fergus home...amazing.

Cock-a-doodle-doo.

Redcloud, I usually agree with you, and would have thought you smarter than that.

I'm speechless. I can't figure out why this is even newsworthy.

Redcloud, explain to me how you show up 10 hours after my post and know what was in the article at the time I posted.

Wow so we can't slaughter our chickens but if we have too many cats or dogs we can take them to the humane society where they will be killed, I'm confused.

Was it in Fergus where these people had a pet duck or goose or something that they weren't allowed to keep????
Just trying to remember.

tapdancer, you don't see a difference between taking a dog to a vet to be euthanized and chopping off a chickens head, slitting its belly and spilling its guts in your backyard?

"""If the city’s animal control officer receives an objection within 10 days of the mailing, no permit will be issued."""

So any single neighbor can veto the entire application process. What form of government is that. Socialism, Capitalism, communism, fascism, ??? I'm completely stumped!! A one vote majority? Who are these characters that approved an ordinance that'll never have any effect.

Seriously, though; I say pass an ordinance banning the sale or use of mushrooms. Man, I really hate mushrooms. What say you all?

Posted by MarcNSuzy (anonymous) on July 8, 2009 at 3:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Yup! Exactly. Let's let the majority decide what's best for everyone. Smoking, anyone?

Hell, lets ban rap music! I hate that crap, and I'm guessing the majority of Fergus does as well. So, I ask, why is it allowed in this wonderful community?

Gotta run, I'm off to the weekly book burning. "Catcher in the Rye"? More like "Catcher in the Fire".
