Ethel Nelson celebrates 100th birthday

One hundred years ago on July 7 in a small North Dakota town, Ethel Nelson was born at her parents' home.
Nelson doesn’t admit that she is now 100, but that didn’t stop those close to her from celebrating this milestone and all of her accomplishments on Tuesday.
When Nelson was 16, she moved to Battle Lake, where she later graduated from high school. Since then she has led a busy life, spending time with family and friends, working, and even traveling to Europe.
Nelson was a long-time employee of the Battle Lake Post Office where she worked for 41 years. She knew just about everyone in the area and would even take over postmaster duties when needed.
Along with working at the Post Office, Nelson was a Sunday school teacher at the local Lutheran church. She taught classes for many years and had a lasting impact on the children who passed through her class.
With most of them now in their 70’s, they still remember Nelson and often visit her to this day.
One of Nelson favorite things to do was to go on walks everyday with her friends. Now a resident of the Good Samaritan Home in Battle Lake, she enjoys Bingo, coffee hour, and Bible study.
