What is this?
4-H feeding the fair
Published 04:31 p.m., July 17, 2009
The smell of food fills the air around the 4-H food stand, luring hungry fairgoers in to order fries or perhaps some chicken fingers.
The 4-H clubs of Otter Tail County take turns in making the food in the stand at the West Otter Tail County Fair. It’s their biggest fund raiser of the year, and the proceeds go to pay for 4-H camps, state 4-H activities and scholarships for Minnesota State Fair trips, Marie Tysdal said while serving up fries and chicken fingers.
Tysdal’s family began with 4-H when daughter Leah was in second grade, about six years ago. She said they appreciate the community’s support of 4-H at the fair.
Friday afternoon was the shift of the Fergus Falls 4-H Club, using a list of directions to create the food ordered. The Fergus Falls 4-H has about 30 members and the families of kids and parents were coming together to help.
Four managers also keep things moving and answer any questions the members have while they’re fixing the food, Tysdal said.
Amy Bergem and her daughter Elizabeth, 10, and daughter’s friend Nicole Scott, 9, were having fun working the cash register.
This is the first year they’ve joined 4-H, although Amy was in it as a child, she said. Amy said she enjoys seeing the club do good in the community.
They have both livestock and non-livestock at the fair. Elizabeth entered two pigs and a rabbit in the fair. Preparing for the fair takes work and many hours of learning about the animals, Elizabeth said.
She said she also enjoys completing the cooking projects in 4-H during the year. Nicole said she also likes the 4-H projects the club does throughout the year.
