Diesel spills at Olson Oil

Published 11:26 a.m., July 27, 2009

At least 180 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the parking lot of Olson Oil Company Sunday morning after a pump was struck by a trailer.

A semi-truck had been fueling up around 9 a.m. when its trailer struck the pump, twisting it and causing a break, according to Fergus Falls Fire Chief Mark Hovland. The emergency shut-off did not work and at least 180 gallons of fuel spilled into the parking lot.

Fergus Falls firefighters arrived on the scene, shut off the power and attempted to contain the spill by diking the area, Hovland said. They pumped the fuel into barrels, put sand down to absorb the remaining diesel and scooped up the sand for future pick-up.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency was notified of the incident, Hovland said.
