They're painting Fergus pink

Published 12:00 p.m., July 31, 2009

Fergus Falls may be decorated with a little more pink than normal in honor of the future Cancer Care and Research Center.

The fundraising effort began Wednesday when the “Pink Posse” visited downtown businesses to sell pink ribbons to be placed in front shop windows. Ribbons are available to the general public for $5 at The Flower Mill.

“We’re building some enthusiasm leading up to the rodeo in two weeks,” said Foundation Coordinator Megan Jensen. “We’re making it a more visible event for folks.”

Businesses are also encouraged to allow staff to doll up in pink, with special made shirts available at the Chamber of Commerce and the Lake Region Healthcare gift shop.

Other food service businesses may have a little more pink on the menu, with $1 being donated for every pink dessert or drink sold.

“People are really excited,” Jensen said. “We’ve never done anything like this before in such a public way.”

With the PRCA Rodeo at the Red Horse Ranch right around the corner, balloons are being sold in honor of or in memory of those who have been affected by cancer. Balloons will be released during the first day of the rodeo on Thursday, August 13.

“Even though cancer is a really sad, scary thing to talk about, this whole two weeks and the rodeo is about celebrating how far we’ve come and celebrating the lives of survivors and those who have lost their fight with cancer,” Jensen said.

Thursday, August 13 will also be the Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night at the PRCA Rodeo, with a number of fundraising activities planned between 5:30 and 7 p.m. A silent auction will be held, with pink merchandise available for sale. A drawing for a 2009 Polaris Youth 4-Wheeler will be available through a raffle drawing. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Lake Region Healthcare gift shop and area businesses. Underwood Lions pork chops will also be served. Tickets for the night will be $7 per person.

The Fifth Annual Red Horse Ranch PRCA Rodeo will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at the Red Horse Ranch, Olson Oil, BJ’s or online. Tickets are also available the day of the event at the gate. For every ticket sold, $2 will be donated to the Cancer Care and Research Center.

The Red Horse Ranch Arena is giving away one VIP ticket for Thursday night’s rodeo for every $100 donated to the Cancer Care and Research Center. VIP tickets include unlimited food, beverages and up-front seats. For more information, contact Sally from the Red Horse Ranch at 736-3000.

As far as fundraising, the Cancer Care and Research Center has raised 90 percent of its $10 million fundraising mark, with roughly $8.7 million raised so far. The goal is to reach the mark by January when the Center is set to open.

For more information on general donations, contact Megan Jensen at 736-8195 or send donations to the Lake Region Hospital Foundation at 712 Cascade Street South, Fergus Falls, MN.
