City to apply for bonding funds
Staff with the city of Fergus Falls intend to apply for state bonding dollars for a new ice arena.
The application is due to the state June 25 and requires a resolution of support for the arena from the city council, City Administrator Mark Sievert said Monday. The resolution does not mean the project will happen, but it is necessary as part of the application process, Sievert said.
It’s a process the city has gone through before, most recently in securing funding for the Tower Road bridge project. Bonding dollars could fund as much as half of the arena project, Sievert said, but that money is in no way guaranteed.
All council members approved the resolution of support Monday.
Skateboard park to close
The skateboard park on Randolph Avenue will close June 8 due to construction at the former middle school.
Public Works Director Anne Martens made the announcement at Monday’s council meeting, saying discussions on where to relocate the park are under way. Roosevelt Park is an option, she said.
According to Martens, the Fergus Falls School Board is scheduled to discuss the topic June 8.
Mayor to travel to Norway
Mayor Hal Leland will travel to Norway mid-month to meet with the country’s royalty.
The trip comes following an invitation from officials in Nordhordland, Norway, Fergus Falls’ sister city. Leland will join nine Nordhordland mayors in greeting King Harald V when the king visits the Western Norway Emigration Center in Sletta, Norway, June 18.
Leland said he will present King Harald with a gift recognizing a trip by the king’s father, Olav V, to Fergus Falls in 1939.
Leland’s wife, Donna Mae, will join him on the trip, which Leland said the couple will fund themselves.
At Monday’s city council meeting, Leland proclaimed June 18 King Harald V and Queen Sonja Day in Fergus Falls.
