Speedway closed, El Tequila opening
Restaurant with Brainerd ties granted liquor license by city
Published 12:19 p.m., June 2, 2009
A new Mexican restaurant is scheduled to open in Fergus Falls later this month.
El Tequila Mexican Restaurant is to open at 524 Western Ave., the former site of Speedway Bar and Grill. The Fergus Falls City Council approved a liquor license for the establishment Monday.
A restaurant by the same name currently operates out of Baxter. According to the Brainerd Dispatch, El Tequila is a family run restaurant that opened in Baxter last fall. Pedro Unzueta, a partner in the restaurant, told the newspaper he’d been in the restaurant business for about 15 years and that the family has two other restaurants in the South.
The restaurant uses fresh ingredients and flavorful spices to create authentic Mexican fare, according to the Dispatch. The menu includes lunches, dinners, appetizers, seafood, vegetarian dishes and salads. Desserts include flan (vanilla Mexican custard), sopapillas (fried flour tortillas with honey, cinnamon and chocolate syrup) and xangos (creamy cheesecake wrapped in a pastry tortilla, fried and dusted with cinnamon and sugar).
Menu prices range from $3 to $4 for a salad to $6 lunch specials to dinners costing $8 to $12. A list of 30 combination options, mixing choices like burritos, tacos and enchiladas, are $8 or $8.50, according to the Brainerd Dispatch.
An employee at the restaurant Monday said the family had been encouraged by the success of the Baxter location. They had received comments from people suggesting they open another restaurant in Fergus Falls, he said.

So do we move our discussion to this story since they shut off the comments about the RTC. Does anyone else see a problem with that? This is suppposed to be a way for people to voice their ideas and the paper just shut it off. I'd like an explanation.

Location? God forbid anyone put a restaurant in the downtown area, because the scenery is much better amongst the interstate and strip malls. But then I suppose no one knows how to parallel park anymore, or are too lazy to walk more than 20 feet from the car to their destination.

I'm wondering if this is going to be an all "family" run business or if any of the Speedway workers will have a chance to work there. It would be nice if El T could bring on some of them.

From the comments I read in the last story about Speedway, it sounds like some of the employees were the problem.

This place was crap from the start. The food was nothing to brag about. The first time I went there, I ordered a chix breast. Little did I know it was already pre-cooked and just had to be warmed up. GROSS! The servers were nothing to brag about either. They didn't seem to care about giving good service, or for that matter, any service at all. Glad it finally bit the dust!

Well, I can understand some of your concerns on Speedway, but my husband started working there from the time they re-opened it last summer and REALLY enjoyed it there. It was the first place he has worked that he actually looked forward to going to work. As far as the comment from MarcNSuzy, he said he doesn't know who told you the chix breast were just heated up...but they were not. They were raw and made there. So he would know, he was one of the cooks! And also to the comment about the employees being the issue, that isn't the main reason. Yes, there were some that didn't do there job and that's why they got let go. My hubby did a great job and he is hoping to get into the new mexican restuarant. When you all comment about Speedway or any other place that closes....please keep in mind that it may be your opioion but you are also hurting the ones that are now out of a job cause of this and we are now struggling to make ends meet, more then before now until he finds another job or gets with the new place. At least his boss is willing to give him a great reference since he was a HARD working, On time to work employee.

I only ate at Speedway once and it was terrible. The food tasted like it had been microwaved, and our waitress had a serious attitude. Glad to see it is changing hands.

I'd like to see a Taco Bell.
