Pelicans beware: A thief is on the loose

Published 12:00 p.m., June 8, 2009

Pelican Pete flew the nest during Memorial Day weekend with a little help.

One of the pelican statues from outside of State Bank and Trust, located at 15 N. Broadway in Pelican Rapids, was taken that weekend, probably on Sunday night, Pelican Rapids Police Chief Jeff Stadum said.

Stadum said it would be great if it was returned, and added that the pelican statues that dot the city are individually unique. The businesses purchase them and each one has been painted in a certain way that represents the business, Stadum said.

In the case of First Bank and Trust, the pelican was painted as a loon.

It wouldn’t be a common thing to see in someone’s house, he said. Anyone with information should call the police department.

Stadum called the theft “unfortunate.” Although many businesses bring them inside or have secured the statue to the ground or building, someone is going to find a way to take it if they want it, he said.

The Pelican Rapids Chamber of Commerce has also issued a warning to its downtown members.

“Watch your pelicans” read a note in the chamber newsletter that arrived in mailboxes Friday.

“How sad someone would do this,” said Angela Harvala-Asleson, the chamber’s executive director. “It makes you wish the whole world was a little more responsibile.”

Harvala-Asleson advised all owners of a Pelican Pete statue to take a look at their pelicans and make sure they are secure against theft.
