There was quite a buzz around Underwood High School Thursday night after a MeritCare helicopter landed in the school parking lot to tend to a man injured in a motorcycle accident.

54-year-old Gene Kelm of Battle Lake was injured in a motorcycle crash while riding his cycle on County Road 35 in rural Battle Lake.

According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office, Kelm was southbound on County Road 35 near 180th Street around 6:30 p.m. when his motorcycle apparently entered a ditch and slid on its side. Kelm struck a chevron sign, and he and the cycle came to a stop just past 180th Street. As of Thursday evening it was unclear whether or not Kelm had been thrown from the motorcycle prior to hitting the sign.

The sheriff's office, Dalton Rescue and Ringdahl Ambulance responded to the scene, and Kelm was transported to the school parking lot. There he and authorities were met by a Life Flight crew who transported Kelm to MeritCare Hospital in Fargo. Kelm suffered severe injuries to his right leg, according to the sheriff's office.
