Cyclones tie Heartland, fall to DL
Published 02:29 p.m., June 17, 2009
The Fergus Falls Cyclones U19 boys traveled to Walker on Monday night to take on Heartland in Northwest District action, coming away with a 2-2 tie in a contest that the Cyclones once again played with only 11 players.
Heartland came out strong and put pressure on the Cyclones early and took a 1-0 lead at the 9 minute mark of the game. The Cyclones settled down and began working the ball around better. At the 12 minute mark, center midfielder Jordan Tommerdahl scored on a blast to the upper right corner of the net on a pass from striker Dallas Cordahl. The Cyclones took a 2-1 lead in the 40th minute of the first half when striker Tyler Hatfield worked the ball past the Heartland keeper who came out to challenge the play to score his first goal of the year. Cordahl assisted on the play.
Heartland scored the tying goal in the 54th minute. Both teams created scoring chances during the balance of the second but failed to find the net as the game ended tied.
“Heartland had some good speed up front but Dan Ronnevik, Reid Cole, Payton Skonseng, Joe Larson, and Cody Murphy worked real hard defensively tonight to help contain the attack. Tommerdahl, Ethan Taylor and Reece Denzel worked hard to setup our attack from their mid positions along with strikers Cordahl and Hatfield.” commented coach Stuart Tommerdahl.
Noah Heidorn had another strong night in goal for the Cyclones.
On Sunday the U19 boys traveled to Detroit Lakes for another Northwest District contest. Detroit Lakes came out on top by a score of 4-0.
Both teams battled hard throughout the contest, with neither team scoring in the first half. Deep into the second half, Detroit Lakes finally tallied the first goal of the game in the 77th minute. Defender Adam Heifert left the game with a leg injury and Detroit Lakes added two more quick goals in the 81st and 82nd minutes. The final goal of the game came at the 87th minute when a Cyclone defender attempted to clear the ball in front of the net, and the ball ricochet off a Detroit Lakes player into the net.
“We played much better today than we did a week ago when we faced Detroit Lakes.” Commented coach Stuart Tommerdahl. “U16 players Derek Jennen, Peter Sawtell and Ben Ronning joined us today and filled in nicely for few of our other players who were unavailable due to work or injury.
The Cyclones, 1-4-1 on the year, host Grand Forks on Wednesday night at the Delagoon Soccer complex. Game time is 7 pm.
