RTC repairs necessary, no insurance on Kirkbride

Published 10:49 a.m., June 17, 2009

Fergus Falls officials don’t know yet whether the city or Campus Development Group (CDG) will be responsible for covering the damage to the Kirkbride tower.

City staff members were scheduled to visit the site Wednesday morning, said City Administrator Mark Sievert. Officials have contacted developers, who will be sending representatives to assess the damage. Developers have been working with architects and engineers who know the facility well and may be able to provide insight into the next steps, Sievert said.

“The immediate thing is to make sure the facility is secure,” he said.

The top of the tower must be repaired at least temporarily to prevent water from entering the building. An area in front of the Kirkbride was blocked off Wednesday in case roof tiles fell from the tower.

City officials decided not to insure the Kirkbride after taking ownership from the state, Sievert said, in part because the property has continued to devalue.
