Perfect weather for Friendship Festival

Published 06:00 a.m., June 21, 2009

Perfect weather complemented all of the activities of the 12th Annual International Friendship Festival Saturday in Pelican Rapids.

“Things always come together, even though it never goes according to plan,” said chaiperson Johanna Christianson. “It’s wonderful to see people from around the world coming together here today.”

On Saturday afternoon, people sampled ethnic food at E.L. Peterson Park and then crossed the suspension bridge to Sherin Park where world music and dance from around the world were the order of the day.

Visitors sat in lawn chairs in the early afternoon as Scottish-Danish folksinger Rod Sinclair performed. He was followed, about 2 p.m., by Traditional French Hurdy Gurdy music featuring Les Bons (Michael Opp and Friends). Other acts followed.

The theme for 2009 was “One Community: Sharing our Stories” since, according to Christianson, everyone has a story to share.

That certainly was true for Nimo Maod of Somalia. She enjoyed visiting with many people during this year’s International Friendship Festival in Pelican Rapids. With her was her son, Mohammed.

The festival was sponsored by the Pelican Rapids Multi-Cultural Committee and the Pelican Rapids Chamber of Commerce. To that end, Christianson said the volunteers see this annual event as a way to also celebrate friendship and community betterment.

Volunteers such as Glenys Ehlert and Janet Lindberg agree.

“This has been a wonderful two days,” said Ehlert about events held both Friday and Saturday. “It’s a special time for our community.”
