Lightning Lake picnic, lake access a gem north of Wendell

Published 01:37 p.m., June 23, 2009

Many travelers going to and from Wendell may not know there’s a gem of a picnic area and public lake access just north of town. This place for summer fun is Lightning Lake, located north of Wendell and just south of the Grant County-Otter Tail County line.

On Friday, June 19, Steve Meyer of Sauk Centre took a break from his duties as an electrical inspector to give his springer spaniel, Abbie, some exercise at Lightning Lake. Aside from one boat tied to the dock at the public access, they had the picnic area all to themselves.

“I get up this way often, for inspections on residential, farm and commercial projects,” said Meyer. “Lightning Lake is a good place to take a break.”

He’s an avid fisherman and hunter in the Sauk Centre area.

Lightning Lake consists of 500 acres with the public boat access located on the west shore of the lake off County Road 11. For the avid fisherman, there are plenty of northern pike and bluegills. The maximum depth is 12 feet.

Similar to many shallow lakes in western Minnesota, the walleye fishery is often boom or bust, depending on the presence of strong year classes and frequency and severity of winterkill events.

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), walleye fry are stocked on an alternate year basis. Strong year classes usually correspond to a successful fry stocking. Most of the total annual fishing pressure occurs early in the season, prior to onset of algae blooms.
