Battle Lake community center to hold grand opening
Published 11:58 a.m., June 24, 2009
The hope for the Lakes Area Community Center (LACC) is that it becomes a visible part of the Battle Lake community.
After a year of work, the LACC is holding its grand opening June 25-27. The facility is located at 112 West Main Street.
LACC volunteer Linda Tikkanen said she is happy that its here, especially since a year ago it was still First Lutheran Church. It was a time of “wait and see,” Tikkanen said, compared to now, when it’s “come and see.” The LACC came about after the church constructed a new building.
Hopefully the LACC will make Battle Lake a more fun place to visit, Tikkanen said.
The LACC has also gained its 501c3 status to become a nonprofit organization and is run by a board of directors.
The facility is scheduled to be open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It is also available to rent for events such as weddings, receptions and parties, Tikkanen noted.
Dig out the blue suede shoes and poodle skirts for a Saturday night of Elvis. Todd Anderson is a classically trained musician and Elvis tribute artist from the Twin Cities. This is the only ticketed event of the weekend and Tikkanen encourages people to get their tickets early. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for 12 and under.
The events for the grand opening weekend begins with Fergus Falls’ men’s quartet “aChord” singing gospel music at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 25, during “Come to the Lakes.”
Residents and visitors alike are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and dancing shoes for the “Island Time Band,” performing Friday. In inclement weather, the music will go indoors.
Classic cars from Perham will be displayed Saturday from 3-7 p.m. outside the LACC. Tikkanen added that others with classic cars are welcome to bring them. During the car show, the Lutheran Church Men’s Club will be serving brats and hot dogs.
The weekend will conclude with the “Pairs and Squares” dancers presenting an exhibition of square dancing at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
