Youth take mission to Fergus Falls streets
Published 12:00 p.m., June 26, 2009
Ask any member of Lyghthouse Youth Ministry (LYM) of Hilltop Celebration Church what it takes for a community to thrive and they’ll tell you point blank: The answer is God.
It’s for that reason that members of LYM have been inspired, for the second year in a row, to take their yearly mission trip to the streets of Fergus Falls.
“It’s important to start in your own town,” said Jenna Hamilton, as she and her friends discussed the impact this week has had in their own lives, as well as others.
LYM has spent the week carrying out a number of community outreach events, including a variety of service projects and, of course, prayer.
Their week-long schedule included a number of projects, with time spent cleaning up the grounds of the public schools and painting a home in Fergus Falls. They also served lunch at the Salvation Army, rolled up their sleeves at Health Resources and packaged meals at Kids Against Hunger. Their service projects didn’t end there. On Thursday, they hosted a fundraiser car wash for Flowing Brook Ministries. Thursday was also spent handing out sodas, and getting to know local residents.
The consensus is that this week has served as a reminder to youth that their mission in Fergus Falls should never cease, and has added fire to their desire to see God’s love spread throughout the city.
“You can carry it always in your heart,” said Taylor Jerne.
That’s something Jerne’s friends could agree with.
“We can go out and live our lives as a testament in our own hometown,” said Danae Rodriguez.
After all, you don’t have to look very far to find someone who needs amazing love.
“They need God just as much as anyone in the world does,” said Haley Diaz-Lane.
