What is this?
Library consultant to retire
Published 07:57 a.m., June 27, 2009
It was Nancy Alsop’s love of books that first led her into the library business. Now after a career spent teaching and working in libraries, she’s made the decision to retire.
But even though her official title will no longer be the Public Library Consultant for the Viking Library System, she’ll continue to surround herself with good books.
“I’m really looking forward to reading,” said Alsop, who has recently taken to popular fiction novels.
Alsop accepted the Fergus Falls position in 1995, moving from Litchfield, Minn., where she worked as a librarian. Before that, Alsop taught at a number of small community schools throughout Minnesota.
The move to Fergus Falls proved to be a rewarding one for Alsop, who quickly became active in community events outside of work. Her role in the Business and Professional Women organization was something she is known for throughout the community. She was also a member of the National Organization for Women (NOW).
“I find those are both very supportive for women to belong to,” she said.
Alsop’s role with the Viking Library System meant she dealt a great deal with the Book Mobile, which travels to areas throughout the county where libraries do not exist. The library system also oversees the operations of the county’s 11 public libraries, including Fergus Falls.’
An avid Twins fan, Alsop considers her role as coordinator for Library Day at the Metrodome to have been the perfect role, as it allowed her to blend her two passions: Twins baseball and reading.
Aside from the joy dealing with books brings Alsop, she’s also had a pleasant experience with the people
