RTC on Monday council agenda

Published 04:52 p.m., March 1, 2009

A new law enforcement center, maintenance needs at City Hall and Regional Treatment Center redevelopment will be topics of discussion at city council meetings Monday.

Council members will meet at 4:30 p.m. in council chambers as part of a series of work sessions on potential city projects. After a session on the Fergus Falls Hockey Arena last week, Monday’s topics will be law enforcement space needs and City Hall maintenance projects.

The following are scheduled for the regular city council meeting at 5:30 p.m.:

• Rick Anderson of Campus Development Group and Kent Mattson, the city’s legal representation for RTC redevelopment, will give an update on plans for the property.

• Council members will vote on a recommendation from the Park and Recreation Advisory Committee to increase campground user fees and implement a 20 percent non-refundable cancellation fee for shelter rentals. Under the proposal, user fees for tents would increase from $5 per night to $10 per night. The cost per camper hook-up would increase from $15 per night to $20 per night.

The city collected $10,250 following the last camping session at DeLagoon Park, according to Public Works Director Anne Martens. Under the proposed fees, the same number of users would bring in $4,000, which would go toward the city’s general fund. The increase in rental fees would bring Fergus Falls prices up to costs in other communities, Martens said last week.

This post is directed at the campus development team. I am not 100% sure of what the plans are for the RTC campus, but I do understand that it is initially going to be used for housing asian students coming into the U.S. As I said though, I am not sure of what the plans are because I haven't really read into it much until recently. I have a suggestion that I would much rather see happen to the campus, even though it is quite similar. I just want to suggest that the campus is used to create a four year college or university. Using the main RTC building for class rooms, the smaller buildings for student on campus housing, and allow for expansion. I think this would be much more beneficial for our community to have such a thing happen. It would cause a positive expansion in our city which has seen job growth go into the negative. I think, if we had an actual four year college in our area we could see much more development. We could see the mall come back to life, we could see many more businesses sprout and grow. Our town could be alive again. Although, I am not saying that we wouldn't benefit from this idea as is, but I think having a four year college open to american students as well as any other students that wish to attend would be great for our local economy. If the original RTC development deal falls through, I would more than love to see this idea take form. I would even be involved in it if I could. Like I said though, I was not very involved in this until recently and I don't know much about this as it is.

I was not implying that the city should pay for it. A private group could take ownership of the RTC grounds and turn it into a college. By the way, don't tell me this town is alive, I lived in New York City for several years. Fergus has nothing compared to pretty much any city, and because I said that don't think you can tell me that I should move. I am planning on moving in the fall. This town will be in my rear view mirror. Also, "the z" is nothing compared to the places I have been. My post wasn't something I had intended to have something like this happen with, I just wanted to make a simple fair suggestion since I won't be able to make it to the city council meeting. I would have suggested it in person if I didn't have class from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. I am going to say this one more time though, I didn't imply the city nor the tax payers had to pay to create a college like I am talking about. It could be a private group project. If I had the money and the time I would most definitely invest and take on the project myself. I don't want to sound cheesy, cliche, nerdy or whatever; but I like to think and plan in a way that is beneficial for everyone around me. One of my reasons to suggest this is because all of the students coming in from where ever would want stuff that our city doesn't have, so that would certainly bring around the expansion of our economy when our city has seen negative growth. Another reason I suggested we turn it into an actual college is because education is a very important thing. I don't care what anyone thinks on that subject, education is so important no matter what you do. Mr_Lincoln, I am not going to fight with you on anything anymore. It seems so childish to me to bicker over someone's thoughts or suggestions. I am just curious if anyone actually thinks this is a good idea, even Mr_Lincoln. I also think the reason why nobody is standing in line to pay for a college is because the version I suggested hasn't really been suggested. I do think if the deal falls through with the development of the RTC campus I could have people lining up to invest, its not a completely senseless idea. If anyone wants, I could do research into this and compile some information on what other towns similar to ours have economy wise. If anybody thinks this would be a good idea, or comparable to the current redevelopment teams idea, let me know. If anyone wants me to get the figures on the difference between a town with a four year college and a town without, let me know.

A short article with so much information....
1. Hockey comes before safety and government.
2. Ricky is still milking us on the RTC, give him is dollar deal and be done, he's only looking out for himself, always has.
3. No more draw to Fergus Falls for campers when they get charged a camping fee like communittees with something else to offer.
4. There will be $14,000 sitting in a little metal box at a ball diamond. That Ann is a sharp cookie to provide that information publicly.
