Roads close as water rises
Published 12:00 p.m., March 23, 2009
Residents on Riverside Drive are unable to leave their homes today after four feet of water flooded the road overnight.
That’s the case in areas throughout Otter Tail County, where flooding is resulting in the closures of roads and highways.
Otter Tail County is under a Flood Warning, effective until 4 p.m. Wednesday. Urban areas along small streams in Otter Tail County are likely to be the hardest hit, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
State Highway 210 from Fergus Falls to Breckenridge has been closed to some traffic. County Highway 10, located five miles west of Elizabeth, near Lein Lake, is also closed, according to county highway engineer Rick West. A detour route is currently being worked out.
Water has also covered County Highway 33, about five miles southeast of Fergus Falls.
A number of other areas along county highways are under water, and signs have been put up to warn motorists not to cross. West said if motorists approach roadways under water, which have not yet been signed, they are advised not to cross.
Current conditions have affected school bus routes for buses picking up students within the Fergus Falls district, but have not left students without transportation.
“We’ve encountered a few roads that have had water over the top of them, there have been a few detours and things like that this morning, but we have just adjusted routes to pick up passengers,” said Otter Tail Coaches co owner Mike Clark.
According to the NWS, Thunderstorms with heavy rain are expected to last throughout the evening, with wind gusts of up to 26 mph. Rainfall throughout the evening is likely to total a quarter of an inch.
Rain will continue on through Tuesday, with between a tenth and a quarter inch of rainfall expected.
Below freezing temperatures will creep into the area Tuesday night, along with snow, causing flooded areas to freeze over.
“That could create skating rinks, but it’s better than being flooded with water,” said NWS meteorologist Bill Barrett. “It will help slow down the river flooding.”

You are a complaining Idiot! If it were not for the hydrology engineers who have vast education and technology to minimize flooding damage you might be floating on your easy chair in your living room! You could also start with learning English and how to complete a sentence. Mr. Lincoln did it 150 years ago. Get off your rear end and fill sand bags if you think that things are not being done right.

Again "mrlincoln" is not engaging his brain before opening his mouth. When we have the amount of snow that we have gotten this winter, there will be flooding somewhere. It is the law of nature.

Lincoln get an education!

Lincoln, learn how to spell, and compose a sentence. "dont by or build a house 10 feet from the red if you are to dumb to know the river gets more water in the spring."
Do you really think that anyone has a home within 10 feet of the Red River? Get out of that easy chair before you start floating away.

I happen to know of a newspaper that just today cancelled the open "feedback" aspect of its operation just because of drivel like the stuff above. They said they were forced to do it for several reasons. A MAJOR reason was the abusive, childish and ignorant postings by a few inadequate souls who have nothing better to do with their lives. The paper I am talking about is substantially larger than this one with a much larger staff and people to monitor the comments. They finally said its usefullness had become marginal and the burden of monitoring garbage was just too much. They stopped at midnight.
Which paper is next?

Mr. Lincoln could actually be a Daily Journal reporter!

if the journal wants to cancel the feedback option, big deal? there are other available forums. Free speech cannot be stopped. if you don't appreciate the posts here, I think you are still afforded the freedom to read a different article?

Lincoln: What do you have to say to those who are in the middle of the county with no rivers or streams. They are victims of overland flooding for the first time ever. Which engineer are you blaming? Did you actually finish grade school? Seriously. You can't spell. You can't construct a sentence. Your thinking is warped, to put it in printable language. Every topic becomes twisted back to government problems, MN Care or the like. You've got a bone to pick with some government program. Maybe you were just rejected because you couldn't legibly fill out your name, who knows. Take some advice: SEEK HELP.

a contributing factor that many do not consider as a cause to the flooding problem is mismanagement.
clear cutting of trees that used to soak up the spring melt waters is the biggest cause of these floods.
engineers have had their hands tied for far to long by the profit based economy.
a complete solution exists to solve these kind of problems but is impossible to implement in this profit based based economy.
the sooner people educate themselves about the Venus project, the sooner we can move forward as a species.
this poorly implemented and unsustainable profit based way of life has outlived its function.
do not wait until the failure of our monetary system has caused any more harm. the universe prefers proactive to reactive.

Isn't the lack of global warming part of the problem? If the Red would thaw from the north south it would solve much of the flooding in the area would it not? :)

I originally am from that area. I have to side with Metasonics. There are MANY more forums to "sound off" on than here. So what if they shut this one down? All I have to say is that i know EXACTLY why the daily journal put up the warning...it WAS childish and immature acts...all about a house fire that occurred about a year ago out by the "cats eye". I wish that people would grow up and realize that talking with such negative attitudes doesn't change anything. If you want to complain (as we are ALLOWED to do under our first amendment rights), take it up with the higher authorities instead of arguing with people that can't do anything about it.

Wow this is fun, another article about a serious matter that has turned into a bash fest. Grow up people and use this opportunity, which the DJ has given us, to converse about the matter at hand.

no, i think you should learn how to spell. you are an embarrassment the the DJ, an embarrassment to fergus falls, an embarrassment to all who TRY to write something for everyone on here. mr_lincoln you bring NOTHING to the table! i think i speak for the majority of people who care about fergus falls. you are filled with spite, hate, and a sense of, well, no good. mr_lincoln, if you were to stop writing, get taken away by a pack of dogs, or just went away, would anybody care?

Mr_Lincoln seems to delight in agitating and aggravating. Best thing to do is totally ignore his posts...not a word, not a syllable said in response. That's what I do when anyone starts spouting drivel to me. Hit your "iggy" button!

Larger and deeper drainage ditches would only increase the water that would be flowing in to the Red River, not reduce it. Hydrology 101

If the river is overflowing and you put more water into it, where does that water go? Got the answer Mr_Lincoln? The water should be going down in a few days and you can grab your shovel and start digging for the next flood. Should have everything under control by then!

I must say Mr. Lincoln I do agree with you on the construction site by Mabel's. Very little erosion control if any is present and I don't see how they can get away with that being that close to the river. If we were closer to the metro the PCA would be all over that one in a second, don't find them up this way much unless somebody complains.

On another note, its kind of hard to sit and blame engineers for the flooding problems that seem to keep occurring. It's virtually impossible to predict just how much run off the drainage and river systems are going to receive each spring with the miles upon miles of field tile that are put in place each year. I'm not bashing on farmer's, we need them, we need the crops, we all have to eat. A fast thaw and lots of rain in the spring will always wreak havoc. The dike systems were built to ensure that another flood like '97, one of the worst we've seen, wouldn't happen again. That's not saying that an even worse flood could occur and completely over take the dike system. It's all a guessing game when it comes to predicting a severe natural catastrophe.

Mr_Lincoln since you are so incrediably well informed on this issue why don't you run for public office..put it to the voters, show concrete proof of what your talking about, and your solutions that are cost effective and actually work you just may get some votes, why wouldn't you want to prove everyone wrong?

What's going on here? Many of you posters keep refering to people who are not even here. It sure makes commentland look silly.
