Church raises funds for well-drilling

Published 11:03 a.m., March 27, 2009

Every year, for the past four years, a number of people from the Underwood area have gone to Haiti to drill wells and repair water pumps.

This team intends to carry on the tradition of Don Robertson, a well driller from the Ashby area, who has been drilling and repairing wells for the past 19 years.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. The country is filled with poverty and despair. One of the major needs of the country is clean drinking water.

Many Haitians have to walk a long distance, up to one mile, to get water. When the well nearest their homes breaks down, they have to walk twice as far to get clean water. The women and children are usually the ones carrying water. The women carry the water on their heads in five gallon pails and the children in two gallon used plastic jugs.

The Haitian people are always so appreciative and thankful whenever a well is being drilled or a pump repaired. There is usually a large crowd at the work site and many happy faces when the water starts flowing.

A couple of nurses have also traveled with the team to experience the health care in Haiti. A new clinic was built where the men had drilled a well last year. It will serve approximately l5000 people. In the first 2 months over 600 people had been seen.

Area women have made hundreds of quilts, school and food bags for Haiti and there is a need for more.

In order for Don’s well drilling team to do their job they have to procure all of the materials such as pipes, pumps, rods, tools, and repair parts for the pumps and the drilling rig. All of these items have to be purchased and transported to Haiti, which is quite expensive.

In order to defray some of the cost, the Sverdrup Lutheran Church of Underwood is having a fundraiser for the Don Robertson’s “Hardly Able Well Drilling Team” on Sunday, March 29.

A pork chop dinner will be served from 4-7 p.m. There also will be a silent auction and a program at 6 p.m.

Clean water is very important. It's a main component of good health.
